“Anti-skateboarding architecture – in pictures”theguardian.com

“In the week that spikes and other hostile architecture devices have been in the news, photographer Marc Vallée has a book of striking images documenting the obstacles put in the way of skateboarders. The second edition is out now.”

My Anti-Skateboarding Devices project & zine was featured in the Guardian last week. Plus I’m quoted in this article by Ben Quinn on defensible architecture and the Camden Bench. The package also includes an interview with London skateboarder Dylan Leadley-Watkins.

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM – 24.07.13. Anti-skateboarding devices at the 201 Bishopsgate/Broadgate Tower on Thursday 24 July 2013 in London, England. Anti-skateboarding devices and architecture are deployed by private corporations and local authorities. The aim is to reshape individual and group behavior and discourage skateboarders from using a particular public or semi public space. (Photo by Marc Vallée/marcvallee.co.uk) (c) Marc Vallée, 2013.

Reading Mike Davis’s City of Quartz and Iain Borden’s Skateboarding, Space and the City lead me to publish Anti-Skateboarding Devices in 2012. To see the second edition (along with Writers) on display with these books at Foyles last week was a pretty damn special moment.

“The physical space of most American and some European cities is becoming privatised. And in the process of this privatisation, deviants who defy defensive architecture are prohibited, demonised and excluded. A class war is being fought, at the level of space. Along with this recapitulation of space goes an extensive iconography; a semiotics of exclusion which is spreading…”Mike Davis, City of Quartz.

The second edition of my Anti-Skateboarding Devices zine is now available buy online via Big Cartel.
