End of Year Review: Zines, Talks & Exhibitions
December 29th, 2015

The year kicked off with a Passenger Films screening and talk on the documentary film Beautiful Losers, a talk on self-publishing with Foyles art buyer Mohara Gill and the publication of the third edition of Anti-Skateboarding Devices.

In July I took part in the Regent’s Open exhibition at Regent’s University London and The Photocopy Club exhibition Zines of the World at the Doomed Gallery in east London.

In the summer Tate Britain acquired Writers, Anti-Skateboarding Devices, Documenting Dylan, Number Four, Queer and Number Six for its library collection.

My seventh zine Tiergarten Transgression was published in August with a launch party and slideshow installation at The Photographers’ Gallery. The zine documents a queer anarchist boy exploring the historic gay cruising area of Berlin’s oldest urban public park. The zine was also featured in the British Journal of Photography and Tate Britain acquired a copy.

Huge thanks to everyone who bought a zine, came to a talk or exhibition. I would also like to wish you all the best for 2016.

One of my 90s New Jersey prints will be on show at The Print Room in Malaysia next month for the Up Your Alley street photography exhibition. The show opens on the 6 September and runs until the 19 October 2014. A selection of my zines and my new book Millbank and that Van will also be on sale.

“The Print Room’s next exhibition “Up Your Alley” focuses on street photography, which is arguably one of the most practised but much-debated genres of photography. What exactly constitutes “street photography”? Does it document the daily heartbeat of a particular place? Does a photographer’s interaction with the people in front of the lens compromise the image in any way? Can a photograph be considered an example of street photography if it only captures the physical space, without the people who live there?

“These were some of the questions that the photographers involved in this exhibition grappled with as they trawled different corners of their respective cities at all hours of the day and night. We will be showing various works from professional and emerging photographers, as well as some of the students of the The Print Room, all of whom have shot in a vast range of styles in locations such as England, Malaysia, South Korea, Japan, Bangladesh and Switzerland.”
