Long Live Southbank Book

Long Live Southbank Book Cover

Long Live Southbank

Selected page spreads of my pictures featured in the Long Live Southbank book. The book is a celebration of the history and culture of the Undercroft and the campaign to save it.

Over 400 pages of essays, pictures and illustrations. From the history of the site and it’s architecture to the present day all wrapped up in four decades of skateboarding history.

The contributors list is long and impressive. A who’s who of British skateboarding. Two of the many things that stand out for me are Chris Steele-Perkins ‘Cardboard City’ pictures of the homeless in the walkways, undercrofts and underpasses of the Southbank and Waterloo. Plus a brilliant essay by Iain Borden on the architecture of the site. And that’s just scratching at the surface of this book.

You can order a copy via the LLSB shop.

The Print Room Exhibition
August 30th, 2014

NEW JERSEY, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. South New Jersey in the summer of 1995. (Photo by Marc Vallée/ (c) Marc Vallée, 1995.

The Print Room

One of my 90s New Jersey prints will be on show at The Print Room in Malaysia next month for the Up Your Alley street photography exhibition. The show opens on the 6 September and runs until the 19 October 2014. A selection of my zines and my new book Millbank and that Van will also be on sale.

“The Print Room’s next exhibition “Up Your Alley” focuses on street photography, which is arguably one of the most practised but much-debated genres of photography. What exactly constitutes “street photography”? Does it document the daily heartbeat of a particular place? Does a photographer’s interaction with the people in front of the lens compromise the image in any way? Can a photograph be considered an example of street photography if it only captures the physical space, without the people who live there?

“These were some of the questions that the photographers involved in this exhibition grappled with as they trawled different corners of their respective cities at all hours of the day and night. We will be showing various works from professional and emerging photographers, as well as some of the students of the The Print Room, all of whom have shot in a vast range of styles in locations such as England, Malaysia, South Korea, Japan, Bangladesh and Switzerland.”

Audio: Larry Clark

Here is the full, raw and unedited audio of the talk I did on Larry Clark at the The Photographers’ Gallery in July. The talk was about one of my favourite pictures from Clark’s book The Perfect Childhood and it’s influence on me and my work.

Huge thanks to Oliver Whitehead and the gallery for asking me to do this. Plus a special thanks to Andrew Youngson for the pictures of the event.

Café Royal

My new book Millbank and that Van will be released by Café Royal Books a month today on Thursday 14 August 2014. The book features many unpublished pictures from the 2010 student protests in London against government plans to raise tuition fees. Collaborating with Café Royal has been a brilliant and rewarding experience.

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM – 10.11.10. Student protesters and police clashed outside the Conservative Party headquarters at Millbank in central London on Wednesday 10th November 2010. Early in the day 50,000 students and supporters marched against governments plans to rise tuition fees to £9,000 per year. (Photo by Marc Vallée/ (c) Marc Vallée, 2010. All rights reserved.

Guardian Feature – Anti-Skateboarding Devices
June 16th, 2014

“Anti-skateboarding architecture – in pictures”

“In the week that spikes and other hostile architecture devices have been in the news, photographer Marc Vallée has a book of striking images documenting the obstacles put in the way of skateboarders. The second edition is out now.”

My Anti-Skateboarding Devices project & zine was featured in the Guardian last week. Plus I’m quoted in this article by Ben Quinn on defensible architecture and the Camden Bench. The package also includes an interview with London skateboarder Dylan Leadley-Watkins.
