“Photobooks – a new platform for photojournalists?”londonphotographers.org

“Zines”marcvallee.co.uk

Next week I will be taking part in a talk on photobooks and self-publishing hosted by the London Photographers’ Branch of the NUJ.

“In our July branch meeting, we will be discussing photobooks. In recent years, self-publishing technology has enabled photobooks to be produced by photographers independently of the big publishing houses, and new photography ebook formats have emerged for tablets and mobiles. This discussion will look at how self-publishing and the new generation of photobooks can be used as an additional storytelling platform for photojournalists.”

This week I have been editing pictures from the 90s and came across a set of Blink 182 contact sheets and a few work prints. I remember the night well. I was given just over an hour with the boys before a gig at the Borderline. I had seen them play at the London Astoria a few years before when Lagwagon was headling and became a fan. It was interesting to work with them at this time just before the band hit the mainstream here in the UK.

I will be printing a set up plus scanning them for my picture library soon. Enjoy the above i-Phone picture for now.

No surprise that I have spent the majority of my working year documenting political dissent. Along side of this, I have been reviewing my achieve of youth culture pictures from the 90’s, with a view to digitize them for my picture library. Without doubt this inspired me to shoot more youth culture pictures this year and is something I want to do a lot more of in 2011.

I’m not saying the protest project is over, far from it, but my focus is definitely shifting. This refocusing is clearly reflected in this edit. Picking ten pictures from the many thousands I have made over the last year has not been easy. I hope you like my edit.

The Blog and I are now on a hiatus and we will be back in the new year.

Enjoy!
